Keys

Opening the front door of the apartment building is some days the best moment
Because I have a set of keys that are uniquely mine and this is one of them
I pay for an apartment and the utilities required to be comfortable, for WiFi
And for the storage room where my bike hides until it’s warm again
I have a key for the door to my individual apartment
And two little golden ones to the mailboxes assigned to A10

On another ring are nearly identical keys for graduate lounge and loading dock
One where I heat up my lunches on occasion and use for nothing else
And the other I try to avoid using by sneaking in through the library
Because the basement of a concrete academic building isn’t an ideal entrance
A slightly different silver-shaded key will be added soon
To unlock the door to the new spacious lab room

Among these are the scan cards for grocery stores and pharmacies
Remain largely useless but colorful surrounding the glinting metal
Including the one that unlocks and drives my blueberry vehicle
And crowding out the jumble is a house key for 300 miles away
That I added a year and a half ago- about the time I moved out
But it’s a comfort to have it dangling there
