Artificially Seasoned

A trail to-be littered with wrappers
As though Halloween and Easter Egg hunts
Took place under tangles of branches
In thickets made by the curl of bittersweet
Where a dozen different confections
Left their colorful outerwear behind

Five green leaves amongst winter browns
Waxy finish feels like a tablecloth
Solid plastic replaces vascular system
Won’t decay in their enduring spring
Until years after the bittersweet is gone
Whose leaves are not near immortal
