This was written just now as I thought over how working outdoors with a heat index of 106 F made me feel. I wanted to write more but I’m just too damn tired from the awful heat.
mornings hot as these make my blood run thick like sludge
skin seeps sweat into a layer that water doesn’t penetrate
as though legs and arms have a membrane protecting
it from the coolness it wants to soak inward, into veins
into arteries that feel tight, feel bloated inside muscles
that ache without moving, from trying not to move
to keep the heat low and sweat from swimming
in the crevices of the body that makes one feel dirty
moist like greasy meat pulled from the oven
that wetness that cannot chill without a cool breeze
